hehe, never seen "no advertizing" being a reason why something is not considered a sport, reason #5 is rather dubious at best, the game does not end whenver the ref feels like it, that's really untrue and has nothing to do with football not being a sport in any csae <grin> I don't think people show up to soccer gamesa at all in the U.S. which is quite sad, they are awesome. Basically I'm afraid none of these arguments are overly convincing. ;)

Yankee, firstly, every socker team in the UK has at least one sponser, more likely 2, they have the name of the main sponsor across the front of the shirts, and the boards surround the pitch, are plastered with adverts as far as I know. The second sponsor is likely to be the sportswear company that makes the clubs clothing. I believe even in the states when decent teams like Manchester united, Chelsea Arsenal and liverpool are in town they fill the stadiums. We don't allow 13 year olds to play in profesional football, so that's a dumb arguement too. Plus there is aloud a minimal amount of contact, though why do you need it, in american football, they wear so much padding, there's no point in the contact either.

and I'm quite against the pads in football, have you ever heard me say I like the padding? no you haven't

yankee g 24 saying your against the pads in football is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Have you ever played football? It is a fundimentally different game then Rugby, but since you've never played either, and never actually had to get padded up for a football game I wouldn't expect any intelligent comment from you.

Very badly. The studs on soccer boots can do a lot of damage to vulnerable calf muscles, rendering a player a useless and expensive liability, while he's healing.Don't the football players have an extra padding of flab, so why do they need all that gear? The shoulder pads alone, are reminiscant of those seen in Dynasty.

let me just say that yankee doesn't represent all Americans. Soccer (football) players are the best atheletes in the world, hands down. Especially in the English game, there is much more than "minimal" or no contact involved. These guys run for 90 minutes a game with only 3 subs and play from August to May and sometimes beyond (with the WC this year, only a one month break).

America currently has its own soccer league and while it is still in the shadows over here, there are some highly skilled players (look at how well Ryan Nelsen at Blackburn or Simon Elliott at Fulham, both mediocre players in MLS, fit into the Prem) and some true supporters. At the professional level, its definitely growing in the US.
